Transpose Any Song into All 12 Keys – Five-Finger Scales Part 3

Liquid error: Nil location provided. Can't build URI.

Transposing means playing the same song in a different key. Reading music in every key takes years, but if you know your five-finger scales, you can start transposing now, using your ear, your fingers, and a little theory.

Start with songs you already know

Familiar tunes like Ode to Joy, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, and Deck the Halls are ideal, because you’ll hear your own mistakes and can correct them yourself. The point isn’t learning the song. It’s learning the skill of transposing.

Write solfege and finger numbers, not notation

Write the melody in solfege (do, re, mi), then add right-hand finger numbers. You don’t need to mark the rhythm, since you already know how the song goes. Play the five-finger scale in the new key first to orient your ears and fingers, then play the song from your notes.

Find the sixth note in any key

Some melodies go one note past the five-finger scale. The sixth note is always a whole step above the fifth. If whole steps and half steps are still unclear, that’s a foundation worth strengthening first.

Handle notes below the starting note

Deck the Halls ends on the seventh note of the scale, below where you started. A small crossover handles it. In awkward keys like G-flat, simply moving one finger works too.

Why every key matters

Playing in all 12 keys builds an intuition for how each key looks, sounds, and feels. Later, when you read music with four flats, it makes sense instead of feeling intimidating.

The video walks through each song at the piano in several keys, including a few honest mistakes along the way. Watch the full lesson above.

Key ideas in this lesson

  • Transposing is playing the same music in a different key.
  • Use familiar songs so you can self-correct by ear.
  • Solfege and finger numbers are all the notation you need.
  • The sixth note is a whole step above the fifth.
  • Practicing all 12 keys now makes reading in any key easier later.
